A parrot dream can go either way in Korean dream folklore. A parrot singing on a branch or flying into your arms points to new love or a new family member, while a parrot mimicking speech is read as gossip.
A parrot is a strange guest in a Korean dream. It isn’t native to Korea, it talks, and it repeats whatever it hears. Korean dream readers have taken all three facts seriously.
The result is a symbol with two faces. A parrot singing in a tree or flying into your arms is read as a new relationship, sometimes even a baby. A parrot that mimics people is read as gossip, nagging and words getting out of hand.
These are traditional readings, not predictions.
Why Korea reads the parrot this way
It talks. In Korean, saying someone repeats things “like a parrot” (앵무새처럼) means they echo others without thinking. In dreams, a talking parrot is about words: chatter, rumors, complaints and arguments.
It’s small, bright and pretty. Some Korean dream books treat small, colorful pet birds such as canaries and parrots as symbols for women or for a sweetheart. That old-fashioned shorthand explains why so many parrot readings are about romance, or about a disagreement with a girlfriend or wife.
It comes in pairs. Korea’s best-known parrot story is in the Samguk Yusa. An envoy brought a pair of parrots back from Tang China for King Heungdeok of Silla. When the female died, the male grieved. The king hung a mirror for it, and the bird pecked at its reflection, realized it was alone, and died of sorrow. The king, himself recently widowed, is said to have written a song about it. It’s a fitting backdrop for the dream reading in which a parrot cries overhead and won’t come near: a parting.
What happened in your dream?
| In your dream | Common Korean reading | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| You simply see a parrot | A new romance or relationship coming in | Good omen |
| A parrot sings on a branch | A new friend or a well-matched new partner | Good omen |
| A parrot flies into your arms | A new member of the family; for a woman, a pregnancy | Good omen |
| You hold a parrot | Told as a taemong | Good omen |
| A parrot mimics speech | Gossip, or a noisy patch between a couple | Warning |
| A parrot talks to you | Nagging or complaints, or a small quarrel | Warning |
| You talk together with a parrot | A fun chat with a close friend, though one old list reads a warm talk with a parrot as an elder falling ill | Depends |
| A parrot cries in the air and won’t come near | A parting: a friend or partner turning away | Warning |
| A parrot bites you | No set traditional reading; usually read through how it felt | Depends |
A parrot that talks or mimics
This is the scene most people remember, and it’s the main warning. Korean dream books read a mimicking parrot as 구설수 (gu-seol-su), the fortune of being talked about. It’s a dream about loose talk, rumors, or a couple bickering. Talking with a parrot is usually milder, closer to a long chat with a friend.
A parrot singing or flying to you
This is the romantic version. A parrot singing on a branch is read as a new friend or partner who suits you. A parrot flying into your arms goes further and is read as someone new joining the family.
Bitten by a parrot (앵무새 물린꿈)
People search for this one, but Korean dream books don’t have a settled traditional reading for a parrot bite. Modern dream sites mostly read it through your reaction: a bite that startled you points to pressure you didn’t expect.
Parrot taemong
A 태몽 (taemong) is a dream that announces a pregnancy. Korean dream books list holding a parrot, or a parrot flying into your arms, as a taemong. Some sites add that the child will be a pretty, clever daughter, which is why “앵무새 태몽 성별” is a common search. Treat that as folklore only.
Who dreamed it?
- Single: a singing parrot is the dream people hope for.
- In a relationship or married: a mimicking parrot is told as a reminder to watch your words.
- Pregnant or trying: a parrot in your arms is the taemong version.
Korea vs the West
Western dream guides often read parrots as communication, imitation, or repeating something you’ve heard. Korea shares that reading, but adds the romantic side: the parrot as a sweetheart, a new love or a little girl on the way.
Questions people ask
Is a parrot dream good or bad in Korea? It depends on what the parrot did. Singing and flying to you are good; mimicking and talking lean toward gossip.
Is a parrot dream a taemong? It can be. Holding a parrot or having one fly into your arms is read that way.
Does a parrot taemong mean a girl? Some Korean dream books say so, but that’s folklore. A dream can’t tell you a baby’s sex.
What does it mean if a parrot talks to me? Usually gossip, nagging or a small quarrel.
Will my parrot dream come true? No dream can promise that. These are traditional readings, not predictions.
